The two biggest U.S. telephone providers, Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc., yesterday posted strong fourth-quarter financial results, boosted by wireless and high-speed Internet growth that helped offset declines in their traditional local telephone business.

Both regional operators are battling cable television rivals, which have added phone and Internet offerings to their service packages and are also eyeing the wireless industry.
