All Eyes On Cingular As AT&T, BellSouth Merge

AT&T’s acquisition of BellSouth will enable the new company to move ahead more aggressively with its Cingular Wireless unit, already the largest cell phone service provider in the country. In the announcement of the merger Sunday, the firms stressed the importance of the wireless operation.

MTV Networks and Sprint Offer Hit Music, Comedy and Entertainment Programming on Sprint TV

MTV Networks and Sprint announced that hit music, comedy and entertainment programming from the nation’s premier music brands - CMT, MTV and VH1 - and the only all-comedy network, COMEDY CENTRAL, is now available on-demand on the Sprint TV lineup. In addition to offering subscribers select clips from such hit MTV Networks programs as ’CMT Insider,’ ’The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,’ ’Laguna Beach’ and ’Best Week Ever,’ Sprint becomes the first domestic wireless service to stream the CMT, MTV and VH1 radio stations.

Vodafone Partners with Mobiltel and Verizon Wireless

Vodafone recently announced it has signed a Partner Agreement with Mobiltel, the Bulgarian mobile operator of Telekom Austria. Vodafone’s products and services will be dual branded in Bulgaria by Mobiltel, combining Mobiltel’s nationally recognised brand with Vodafone’s global brand.

USA Wireless Market Revenue Rises 10.7%

Revenue in the USA wireless market totaled US$174.7 billion in 2005, up 10.7% from 2004, with an acceleration in handset revenue and a ramp-up in new wireless subscribers as key drivers of growth, according to the newly released report from the industry trade association, TIA. The wireless handset and device market totaled $15 billion in 2005 and is expected to increase 19.3% in 2006 climbing to $17.8 billion. Twenty-five million new wireless subscribers were added in 2005, more than in any other year, and the 21.4 million subscribers added in 2004 matched the previous high in 2001.

CBS to launch wireless alerts service

Television and radio station owner CBS Corp. on Monday said it plans to launch a service that offers wireless breaking news video and text alerts, as it seeks to find new places for its programing.

Verizon Wireless Expands Network Footprint

Verizon Wireless, the second largest mobile operator in the US, continues to expand its national footprint with the purchase of Cal-One Cellular LP for an undisclosed sum. The operator spends on average $5bn a year expanding its mobile network.

Cal-One Cellular operates under the Cal North Wireless brand, and the deal means that Verizon Wireless can expand its network footprint in northern California, specifically in Del Norte, Humboldt, Siskiyou and Trinity counties.

China Moves Toward 3G Wireless

China is the largest mobile phone market in the world. In 2004, the Chinese purchased 92 million mobile phones, an increase of 15.8 percent over 2003. Analysts IDC forecasts that the market for mobile handsets will continue to grow, with more than 400 million handsets sold between now and 2009.

Mobile firms bet on wireless broadband to boost 3G

More and more mobile operators are betting on upgrades to their third-generation (3G) networks, hoping to ride a booming market for services such as music downloads and fend off threats from new technologies.

Wireless broadband was a key theme at the mobile industry’s biggest annual trade show in Barcelona this week, as one operator after another unveiled plans to roll out HSDPA, a technology that can offer Internet speeds at least four faster than the present WCDMA 3G standard.
