Major cell phone carriers may team up to provide cell phone service to New York City subway riders in bids due next Wednesday, but the carriers reportedly doubt whether they could make any money from the project.

Cingular Wireless, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and possibly Sprint Nextel may join together to offer the service, according to Friday’s edition of the New York Times.
